How to Control How Often Flathive Emails You

Your inbox, your rules. Set notifications to match the way you actually use Flathive — whether that is staying on top of every message or checking in at your own pace.

Flathive sends email notifications to keep you informed when things happen on your account — new messages, potential flatmate matches, and reminders about listings you have started but not published.

The right frequency is different for everyone. An active landlord checking messages every few hours wants to hear about new enquiries immediately. Someone who logs in once a week probably does not. These settings let you find the right balance.

Where to find notification settings

Changes take effect immediately. If you were receiving notifications and switch to Never, no further emails will be sent for that category — even if messages are already waiting.

The three notification settings

Each setting controls a different type of email independently, so you can mix and match. For example: get message notifications immediately, but only hear about matches once a day.

Messages

Default: Immediately

Controls how often you are emailed when you have unread messages from other members.

When someone sends you a message and you have not read it, Flathive will send you a notification based on this setting. Once you read the conversation, the clock resets — so you only get nudged when there is genuinely something new waiting for you.

Matches

Default: Immediately

Controls how often you hear about new flatmate or property matches that fit your preferences.

Flathive periodically compares flatmate seekers and available properties. When a strong match is found — based on rent range, location, and preferences — both parties are notified. This setting controls how quickly you hear about those matches.

Communication

Default: Once a day

Controls general platform communications — draft listing reminders, listing updates, and other account notices.

This covers things like reminders to finish a draft listing you started, or notices about your account activity. It defaults to once a day to keep things tidy without being overwhelming.

Frequency options explained

All three settings share the same four frequency options. Here is what each one means in practice.

ImmediatelyDefault

You get an email as soon as you have an unread message — typically within the hour. Best if you want to respond quickly to enquiries.

Best for: Active landlords and tenants checking messages daily
🌅Once a day

If you have unread messages, you get one summary email per day. You will not be notified again until you read your messages and new ones arrive.

Best for: People who check email once a day and do not want interruptions
📅Once a week

A weekly nudge if messages are sitting unread. Low-frequency and unobtrusive — but you may miss time-sensitive enquiries.

Best for: Users who prefer minimal email and are not actively searching
🔕Never

No email notifications for messages. You will only see new messages when you log in directly.

Best for: Users who check Flathive regularly and do not want any email prompts

How the notification system works

Flathive does not send you an email for every single message — that would get noisy fast. Instead, it works more like a gentle nudge:

  • When you receive a message and have not read it yet, a notification is queued
  • One email is sent per unread session — not one per message
  • Once you read the conversation, the notification resets
  • If messages are still unread after your chosen interval, a follow-up is sent

Reading a conversation on Flathive (web or mobile) resets the notification countdown automatically. You will not keep receiving reminders about a message you have already seen.
